The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

I was twelve when the Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Gatsby came out.  I can still remember how much that movie influenced my wardrobe, even then.

white bucks

I bought my first pair of white bucks, my first seersucker suit;  Yes I was styling at twelve.  Between The American Gigolo and this movie my desires for elegant and dandi menswear was set in stone.

Redford

I recently rewatched the 1974 Gatsby to prepare for this years remake and I have to say, at twelve I did not truly get the impact of how sad the whole thing is (hope I’m not giving this away.)

Redford 2

The clothes are amazing, the parties to die for and the cars…(this movie also helped discover my latent car fedish.)

Leonardo

But all that said, a very sad tale indeed.  Anyhoo, there is a new Gatsby in town, in 3-D no less, and though I haven’t seen it yet (hopefully this weekend), I will reserve judgment.  The reviews haven’t been kind but my reviews will be more about the clothes than the acting in this one.

The Gatsby's

There have been several Great Gatsby’s in the movie world and I hear Fitzgerald was a dapper man.  I thank him for the influence his novel had on men’s fashion.  And unlike in my youth, where you had to go it on your own, there are many designers and fashion brands that have begun to put these looks, with modern lines, on the shelves.  I look forward to seeing how this new movie inspires men’s fashion in the coming 2013/2014 seasons.

Part of the Fashion Revolution!

There is a fashion revolution happening in menswear right now and Saint Harridan is at the cutting edge of this movement.  They are the only company that has dared create a ready-to-wear suit for the Dandi who likes to be their dapper best in menswear tailored suiting.

Sheree in Saint Harridan

My Saint Harridan t-shirt, dog tags and patch arrived today and I wear them with pride, not only as their fashion advisor but as a huge fan.

Patch

This is just the beginning! So get on board.  If you love to look dapper and love menswear as much as I do check out their website.

Dog Tags

Many of you all have already ordered suits, pants, shirts, hoodies and vests. And there will plenty more to come as soon as these Kickstarter orders are filled.

Be a part of the fashion revolution.  Become a Saint today!

Esther Quek

1

Okay, maybe I do over use the word fabulous, but really, it’s such a great word to describe so many things…and people, and well Esther Quek deserves this word more than most.

2

This woman can rock some menswear and…

3

she knows how to help Dandi’s of all kinds do the same, in fact it’s her job.

4

She is the group fashion director of the classic menswear magazine The Rake (gotta love it!)

5

This fabulesta is not afraid to mix patterns (a very preppy approach to dressing) and she really does capture the masculinity of menswear dressing while still making it distinctly her own.

6

I encourage my readers to think outside the box of the sometimes boring American menswear magazine aesthetic.

7

It’s a good place to start and get ideas but I find European, Asian and other style influences to be beneficial and necessary to stand out as a Dapper Dandi.

9

Don’t be afraid to try new things, mix colors, patterns and textures.  This can be done simply with a scarf or tie, or with a colorful pair of pants or signature jacket. Whatever you do remember to have fun and that all-in-all fashion is a reflection of your greatest image of self.

Richard Chai

Five years ago the brother of Odin, New York’s founder Eddy Chai started his own menswear label.

Richard Chai‘s collections represent the creative urban Dandi who has style but doesn’t want to look “too pulled together.”

Chai’s designs are not to be considered precious, he is a strong believer and upholder of the idea of that fashion can be stylish, actually fashion forward, yet casual at the same time.

Even his footwear has elements of casual elegance.

For F/W 2012 Chai has kept his pallet warm and dark.

This lends his collection to go with just about anything you want to pair the pieces with.  The lines are unique and pure;  his collection has both a international and Americana feel.  And I particularly love all of the elements of this last picture.  Any Dandi would feel put together and powerfully stylish in this look for F/W 2012.

Libertine-Libertine

The word means devoid of most moral restraints and Libertine-Libertine, a  Copenhagen-based clothing company, definitely lives up to its name.

I love the diversity of styles and looks that they create.  You can look good getting a taco at Wholefoods in the jog suit inspired design at the top and then rock a Saturday night in the black and white look above.

Whimsy shows up in this Danish brand a lot and I love whimsy so I am a fan.  Speaking of love, I love this brown tone-on-tone outerwear and how cute is the simple light blues that just scream summer and a casualness that a Dandi can wear with everything from flip-flops to wingtips (both without socks please!)

Marian Kihogo – Genius!

Marian Kihogo is not only just fabulous because she has my mother’s first name,  oh no, she’s fabulous because she is the new star on the fashion scene.  And if you are as late to the party on this amazing style maverick as I am then stop what you are doing right now and check out her blog at mariankihogo.com.

She made it on preppybaba because she is an Andro queen, though I might have featured her anyway because of her amazing Dandi sense of style.  I strongly believe that a Dandi should never box themselves in with someone elses idea of how they should dress and Marian is a living, breathing example of this in everything she does.

Marian is not just a style icon sitting around writing blogs and buying fabulous clothes.  She is a stylist of the red carpet, tastemaker, branding consultant, etc, etc, etc.  I bet she has her own clothing line before too soon and she was listed in the New York Post’s 25 Best Dressed at New York Fashion Week Fall Winter 2011.

Mix gender in what you wear!

I love how she mixes it up.  Here she has on a motorcycle jacket along with lighter fabric skirt.  Not only has she contrasted fabrics but also genres of style to perfection.

Her tom-boy look is brought into fem fashion with her heels, but any Dandi can pull this off with a great pair of wingtips or designer kicks.

I also love how she pushes the Andro boundaries of looking masculine and distinctly feminine at the same time.  She is a genius inspiration for all to display all of who we really are.  In other words “show me what you’re working with!”

GLOBAL STYLE

I ended the StyleX weekend last night at the Neiman Marcus‘ StyleX party at the Palm Door in downtown Austin.

I missed the initial launch of this great idea by founders Joah Spearman and Jon Pattillo at last year’s SXSW and was fortunate enough to ride the coattails of my sweetie Miramar, who was one of the event stylist for the weekend.

It’s 3:00 in the morning folks. You’d look this way too! :)

I meet a lot of great people that are doing wonderful things in the world of fashion and style all over the globe, particularly here in Austin, and I learned a lot from the panel discussions I sat around to hear.

The world is changing folks (as if you don’t already know this!) in all areas of commerce and business but particularly in the way of the old guard of fashion.  No longer are the designers and magazine editors able to stay locked away in their elite palaces and dictate to us what we wear, how we wear it and who it’s for.

There are so many vehicles; Thre.ad and Pinterest to name a very few, as well as all of the other social media vehicles we use everyday without thought from Twitter to Facebook, that are taking away the power from all measures of commercial enterprise and putting it where it always belonged, in the hands of the consumer.

I learned during the discussions that this world, as global and connected as it is becoming is also being a niche consumer market  for every designer, retailer, blogger…you name it.  Basically every idea and business needs to figure out their niche audience.  Who will get the most out of what you have to offer?  Narrow marketing resources and strategies and find them and stay connected to them.  We experience an overload of information every, single, day and because of this we have an overload of choices!

For example – I choose who I want to listen too now (select and proven bloggers, no longer GQ, Vogue, Esquire, etc), I choose the conversations I want to have  with consumers that already have experience with the products I am considering buying (chat rooms, comment discussions, informed blogger interaction),  I follow who they like (not the product’s slick and expensive advertising)…now here is where the niche part comes in…I then interact with the people who create the products I decide to buy.  Let me say this another way, long gone are the days when a company has a wall of protection between them and their consumers and only talks to shareholders at duress during their yearly stockholder meeting.  Consumers want to know, in fact are demanding to know and keep in close contact with the creators behind the brands they are buying.

If you are in the business of anything that has to do with the public, but particularly fashion, you need to know why you do what you do and convey that to your customer in everything you create, every way you present your brand and in all of the ways you promote your brand.  What is your story?  Why do you do what you do?  And be prepared to make lifelong acquaintances if not friendships with the people who patron your business.  This is a new global economy and it’s bringing us closer together everyday!

STYLE X at SXSW

The place where I live, work, and love is coming alive!  No, it’s not because of a bunch of creepy crawlies, it’s because of SXSW!  For those of you who don’t know what the heck I’m talking about I’m talking about South by Southwest

a Music, Film, Interactive and now Fashion mecca in the South where all of the cool people spend a part of their March (famous actors, musicians, leading names in technology…) to share and learn about all of the latest and greatest trends in technology, listen to the hottest bands in the world and watch some of the most amazing new films of 2012.

And now, the sound of real music to my ears, SX  is also beginning to feature all aspects of the fashion world, from technology to style.  You can learn how to use social media and all of the tools and technology to start your own fashion line or just become an even bigger slave to your (secret) obsession with it.

Did I mention fashion!?!  Yes I did and on March 16th and 17th (of which my fashion stylist extraordinaire and sweetie Miramar is a part) Style X Personal Guided Shoppers will help you become an even more  fabulous version of youreslf by styling you, giving you pointers on the latest trends, innovative designers and who to wear from the event.

Haven’t bought a ticket yet?  There’s plenty of time and plenty of panels, fun, new friends to meet, and an amazing times to be had.  Come on down, we know you’ll have a Dandi good time! :)

Patrik Ervell

Patrik Ervell is an amazing designer and a member of Opening Ceremony’s extended family.  My sweetheart is in love with Opening Ceremony so I’ve gotta love the rest of their family too.

The Ervell Dandi is modern and minimalist, yet with a decided sense of humor in the landscape he offers of vivid watercolors.

Slim fit trousers, suiting, and bomber jackets walk the runway of style for this designers spring collection.   And in this photo above a definite nod to the James Dean in all of us.

Of course, as we continue to build the Ark here in Texas I have to show this great outerwear jacket.  Keeping stylish while also keeping dry!

Your Own Private Stylist

So I was reading this article from the December edition of Esquire called “My Own Private New Deal.” It is basically about this writer who gets the fashion director of Esquire to take him shopping to update his wardrobe for under $1000. My sweetie does the same thing for men and women here in Austin so I was curious to see what exactly Peter Martin, the writer got out of his process. Well for one thing he got two pairs of jeans, three chinos, a few sweaters, three, count them three blazers and four dress shirts, all for $953.57.

May I say that that is some amazing shopping and it takes a professional to help Dandi’s like us come out with that kind of haul on that kind of budget. Really, hiring a professional stylist is one of the smartest investments you can make to help clear out the old stuff in your closet and help you put together the Dandi pieces that not only fit your body well but also your personality.

The first thing a professional stylist will do for you is help you let go of all of those clothes that really really need to go. Maybe it’s something lingering from the ’80′s or it is several items that do not do you justice. And in the case of many Dandi’s who buy men’s clothing and don’t have them altered, that could mean a great many items. The next thing that is great about having your own stylist is that they will go shopping with you and help you put together many different peices for many different looks within your budget. But as Peter found out in his article that doesn’t mean that you will find everything the same day or the same month for that matter.

Even stylist have to go through trial and error with you because you are a unique body type, which is encouraging for any of us who try to force a look just because we think it will be the only thing in our size that will fit, even if it doesn’t quite fit the way we would like. Don’t let the clothes rule, your body is never wrong, and there will be something perfect to fit you. Now the great news about all of this is that stylist can just look at you and know pretty much what will fit and what won’t. My sweetie even knows people’s sizes without them telling her. Stylists do this everyday so they know where to shop. Next time you are changing up your wardrobe, seriously consider a personal stylist. you will be glad you did!
