Marian Kihogo is not only just fabulous because she has my mother’s first name, oh no, she’s fabulous because she is the new star on the fashion scene. And if you are as late to the party on this amazing style maverick as I am then stop what you are doing right now and check out her blog at mariankihogo.com.

She made it on preppybaba because she is an Andro queen, though I might have featured her anyway because of her amazing Dandi sense of style. I strongly believe that a Dandi should never box themselves in with someone elses idea of how they should dress and Marian is a living, breathing example of this in everything she does.

Marian is not just a style icon sitting around writing blogs and buying fabulous clothes. She is a stylist of the red carpet, tastemaker, branding consultant, etc, etc, etc. I bet she has her own clothing line before too soon and she was listed in the New York Post’s 25 Best Dressed at New York Fashion Week Fall Winter 2011.

- Mix gender in what you wear!
I love how she mixes it up. Here she has on a motorcycle jacket along with lighter fabric skirt. Not only has she contrasted fabrics but also genres of style to perfection.

Her tom-boy look is brought into fem fashion with her heels, but any Dandi can pull this off with a great pair of wingtips or designer kicks.

I also love how she pushes the Andro boundaries of looking masculine and distinctly feminine at the same time. She is a genius inspiration for all to display all of who we really are. In other words “show me what you’re working with!”

Last week I mentioned Nick Wooster in my blog The Haircut for
Spring 2012 and I would be remiss if I didn’t give him his own separate moment so here we go…
Nick-the man-Wooster…who thinks of your Dandi wardrobe as a garden (I get that),
former men’s fashion director of both
Neiman Marcus and
Bergdorf Goodman‘s, is now creative director for
JCPenney (can you believe it!?!
Ellen and now this!) All I can say for JCPenney is that they have just raised the bar of their Brand and I can’t wait to see what this company, one of my own stomping grounds for many years, creates with this style Dandy at the helm.
This man is what a dapper Dandi strives for. He layers like nobodies business, has a
sleeve tattoo in this sometimes highly judgmental and conservative world of fashion (believe!) And has swagger and impeccable taste and tailoring to match.

You want gorgeous and proper? Then look stage left and welcome Commonwealth Proper. Custom and ready to wear clothing made for the stylish Dandi.

And these fabulous designs are made in the U.S.

Look at this beautiful three piece suit and the gorgeous collar on the vest, styled beautifully with a sleek patterned hankie.

David Arquette is one of the owners (and who doesn’t love a movie star that also has a clothing line…) and I’ve certainly got to love menswear that fits our beloved Dandi Chaz Bono so well.

Kara Laricks of the interesting new fashion show Fashion Star, is one of our own and is showing herself to be a great designer.

On the first week of the show she didn’t quite ‘wow’ us with her innovative collar and tie designs. It’s not that they aren’t fabulous, it was just that she made the strange decision to make her first impression to us and the buyers by showing her first line against the backdrop of someone else’s clothes.

Kara wound up with no bids and in the bottom three but was thankfully saved for this week where she not only rocked it out with her fashion sense and dress creation…

but created a bidding war between H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue, with the initial bid starting at $50,000 and Saks winning out with the highest bid offered any designer so far at $110,000. Kara is the fashion Dandi to watch. I think she will do very well on this show and in her career as a designer. Go to Saks and buy her latest creation for your sweetie today!

Ooo – la-la!! Azmarie is hot by anyone’s standards and she was last nights winner of America’s Next Top Model. Every season Tyra tries to stir things up with a bi-sexual or lesbian but this season she definitely out did herself with Azmarie. Even my sweetie has a little crush on her (and if she were my type I wouldn’t be able to resist either.)

You know I love androgyny so I absolutely love Azmarie’s look. She was clearly born that way. Her pouty lips and intrinsic personal style are almost too hot for television.

I was scared for her last week because she did not deliver on her photograph and I was afraid that despite her gorgwa-ness she wasn’t going to be able to make it work on camera.

But she more than made up for it this week and brought not only delivered a not picture but also brought it as a leader and creative director (though I also think she excelled because she loved being able to touch all the ladies!)
My household is rooting for you Azmarie. I hope you get to be crowned America’s Next Top Model. We all will be well represented.

Dandi’s are showing up all over television these days and last night when I watched my dvr’d recording of The Voice there was a most talented Dandi, Sarah Golden, singing her heart out against rocker Juliet Simms from Cee-Lo Green‘s team.

Sadly Sarah was not picked to go through. Her gentle folk singer stylings just could not compete with Juliet’s hard edged rocker voice. A pity too because Sarah has a very sultry and beautiful voice. Quite a talent, if you ask me.

And though that’s great that Sarah can sing and all, but this is a fashion blog and I have to say the other thing Sarah did well is present her Dandi style to us each time she appeared on camera. I really liked the way she dressed from audition to performance. Her style reads confident and for the most part it fit her body well.

This is the picture they have up of her for her album (go buy it!) on mytexasmusic.com. She looks a lot like Jody Foster in her younger days (who would have thought it!?!)
Congratulations Sarah for getting as far as you did. You have a bright future ahead of you.
Another Texas Dandi doing great things!

There are but a few fabulous creatures in the world that have had a life changing impact on my life and I have to say that Grace Jones is in the top two (Elton John when he was first starting out and dressed up in all of his crazy glory tops the list.) When I was a wee little Dandi, struggling to find out exactly how I fit into the world, this amazing, irreverent presence came across my television screen one day and my life was forever changed.

Grace Jones was and still is a shape shifter. Someone who could care less about what others think of how she looks, how she sounds and what she says. She always felt in control of her performance and her image no matter how many people got a hold of it to take it apart only to try and put it back together again in ways that felt right to them.

And there seems to be no end in sight for this Dandi, fashion icon, feminine/masculine, gender-bending, androgynous, genius. I am reveling in the dub version of her CD release Hurricane which came out last year. I already had the original but had to get the dub and I am thrilled to say it is worth every penny. I love you Grace!!! Keep the music, the fashion and the irreverence coming for many, many years to come.

My favorite Hollywood couple is on the front cover of one of my favorite design magazines. Is it Christmas already? It has finally happened that lesbians have transcended the design box. You know the one where we are style-less, flannel wearing, Doc Marten stomping retro throw backs with houses designed in classic college inspired furniture. To put it bluntly – the hymen has been broken!

Ellen has put her money where her house is. She loves to buy houses and make them special places for her and her family. This is a woman after my own heart as I do love to decorate and make my home a warm, inviting place for my family and friends. And I know for sure one place is not enough to capture all of my visions and can’t wait to follow Ellen’s lead. The one that is featured in this article is the seventh that Portia and Ellen have owned together and if you can believe it they are actually thinking of putting it on the market and moving on to their next adventure.

Though Ellen loves to change her environments to the point that the living room alone has seen 16 different lives (according to Portia), they loved the house so much at first sight that they bought it fully furnished and then added furniture, art and objects to pull it all together to become a place that reflects them both beautifully.

JD Samson, singer, model, feminist electropunk and all around Dandi has a wonderful spread in Vogue Homme which makes me very happy. I have to say that the European versions of men’s magazines are certainly much more willing to be creative and do features with a lot more diversity than the staid ole American ones. “Ohhh, scary, a women who looks good in men’s clothing whose not projecting a feminine image…” Are their egos really so fragile?
In case you don’t know who JD is, she is a gender bending performer who appears in both the band Le Tigre and the band MEN. And if that weren’t enough she is also a DJ and producer.
Vogue Homme first did a spread with Lady Gaga’s Jo Calderone making this magazine as After Ellen says ‘a lesbian’s delight.’ What Vogue Homme has done is what I think the true meaning of androgynous beauty is all about. My wish for x-mas would be for every men’s magazine to do a shoot with their favorite Dandi. I know they’d sell more mag’s!

Jo Calderone is a surprising style icon. Or maybe not, being that it comes from the mind of the one and only genius and twisted Lady Gaga. Whether you love her or hate her, the last thing that you can say about her is that she’s boring.
As shown on the VMA’s last night her male alter ego Jo rocked the stage in a dirty t-shirt and stylish baggy black pants. The thing is, almost in spite of itself the overall presentation was sexy as hell. Even the circa 1950′s pompadour on his head that has graced some of the most legendary heads from Elvis to Little Richard seemed right at home.
Jo Calderone is the perfect example of how Dandi’s can work a look, any look, as long as they really mean it and understand how to present within the intentions of the look. My hats off to Jo for not only giving us all a great performance last night but introducing to the mainstream the beautiful art of gender bending with style. I hope this gives all of the baby Dandi’s out there some inspiration to get out there and show the world what you’re working with!
