I was twelve when the Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Gatsby came out. I can still remember how much that movie influenced my wardrobe, even then.

I bought my first pair of white bucks, my first seersucker suit; Yes I was styling at twelve. Between The American Gigolo and this movie my desires for elegant and dandi menswear was set in stone.

I recently rewatched the 1974 Gatsby to prepare for this years remake and I have to say, at twelve I did not truly get the impact of how sad the whole thing is (hope I’m not giving this away.)

The clothes are amazing, the parties to die for and the cars…(this movie also helped discover my latent car fedish.)

But all that said, a very sad tale indeed. Anyhoo, there is a new Gatsby in town, in 3-D no less, and though I haven’t seen it yet (hopefully this weekend), I will reserve judgment. The reviews haven’t been kind but my reviews will be more about the clothes than the acting in this one.

There have been several Great Gatsby’s in the movie world and I hear Fitzgerald was a dapper man. I thank him for the influence his novel had on men’s fashion. And unlike in my youth, where you had to go it on your own, there are many designers and fashion brands that have begun to put these looks, with modern lines, on the shelves. I look forward to seeing how this new movie inspires men’s fashion in the coming 2013/2014 seasons.

There is a fashion revolution happening in menswear right now and Saint Harridan is at the cutting edge of this movement. They are the only company that has dared create a ready-to-wear suit for the Dandi who likes to be their dapper best in menswear tailored suiting.

My Saint Harridan t-shirt, dog tags and patch arrived today and I wear them with pride, not only as their fashion advisor but as a huge fan.

This is just the beginning! So get on board. If you love to look dapper and love menswear as much as I do check out their website.

Many of you all have already ordered suits, pants, shirts, hoodies and vests. And there will plenty more to come as soon as these Kickstarter orders are filled.
Be a part of the fashion revolution. Become a Saint today!

Ah, the Brits. Some of my favorite dapper Dandy’s in all the land. They just really know how to pull it all together in such a refined and often very colorful way.

Okay true, this look is not that colorful but gosh darn if it isn’t still wonderful. And who is this designer I am referring to? Daks, of London.

Very low key, very elegant. This collection was inspired by formalwear (if you couldn’t tell)…

It really modernizes the look and makes it approachable for everyday.

Gotta love all of the top hats. I do say that the idea of a single pop of color used with the top hat and (maybe) gloves ( if wearing a black tux on your wedding day) can be a very memorable and signature approach to making it your day as well.

Now I know spring is approaching so the last thing anyone is thinking about is going out to buy leather. But the key word here is spring. And in many climates a sweet new lightweight leather jacket or pair of pants might just be the ticket. Certainly this collection is for F/W 2013 but I say take your inspirations from everywhere.

I love everything about this look. Chic, minimal and striking. Done!

Talk about bringing the formal into the everyday. I think this does it beautifuly. Those stylsh Brits do it again!

Tie The Knot. What a perfect name for the season. And as more and more couples are looking to actually tie the knot, here is an opportunity for the Dandi to (k)not only look stylish (see what I did there!?!), but to also benefit a number of LGBT organizations.

Jesse and Justin
Jess Tyler Ferguson and his fiance Justin Mikita have created this wonderful line of bow-ties for the dapper Dandi in all of us. Their mission is to help LGBT causes as well as use their visibility as a couple to support gay marriage.

Stylish and very Jesse…

…and they just released their spring collection last week at Avenue in New York with a plan to add cufflinks for the summer collection.

They are also looking to team up with a stationary store and create wedding invitations with the proceeds going on to benefit marraige equality.
Creative ways to raise money and raise awareness. Got to love it!
Tie The Knot ties are available exclusively at The Tie Bar!

…yeah I did…but I had too. How could I not title a post like that when I’m about to talk about the latest in a growing plethora of butch, genderqueer, fashion start-ups, this one with the name of HauteButch!

The offerings and designs are what is being called by the fashion world “urban”…I call them butch style.

I do so love the design of this coat (model on the left), and I hope to see more of this kind of design for this line, fitted, fashion forward and edgy.

These kicks are hot. More please!

HauteButch is for the fierce butch female. The line is affordable and they promise quality clothing with a design range from blazers to (my favorite of course) preppy pastel polos and shoes (something not as prevalent in the latest incarnation of queer owned style houses.)
The HauteButch moto – they are the “go to destination for all things butch.” K. Michelle is the brainchild and Karen Roberts, co-founder and director. They say of their brand that HauteButch is about bridging the gap for their customers “between their selves, styles, lifestyles, and values.”
Check them out today!
Oh, and while you’re at it, 2013 is upon us and they have a hot new calendar that is a must have for butch’s and fem’s alike.

One of my favorite looks for myself is definitely denim on denim. And I love it on everyone from cowbois to fashionistas, but don’t ask my sweetheart what she thinks of the look, let’s just say it’s not her idea of style.
Yet I think it is one of the sexiest, yet casual-yet can be dressy styles anyone can master and it is most fabulously worn with a great pair of worn, battered, but still completely butch as heck, boots. But that’s just me. And of course I would be remiss (and behind the trend) not to single out the most durable and honored king/queen of all the denim icons – the classic jeans jacket, it is oh so truly cool.
Now most of us already have one, or two, or even more than we’d care to admit of these “image of Steve McQueen provoking” jackets in our closets. Perhaps you completely forgot you had it or have unwisely decided it was too worn out or frayed to even wear anymore. Au contraire dear Dandi, now is the perfect time to pull it out and style it up.
Got rid of yours years ago? Well here are some new designs to spruce up an old idea. The jean jacket for S/S 2013 is not just made from old school denim, designers are serving us up new fabrics and more than just your basic blues to chose from.
Or no color at all as seen here with Public School’s coated denim with leather sleeves.
Not into leather? Black Apple makes this wonderful distressed number with pleather. But what makes denim and the classic jean jacket design look it’s best, to me, is the personal touch. So here are some street-wear inspirations to stir up your sartorial juices.

Wow! We made it. And that is saying a lot, for in my experience many people in my sphere of love and friendship transitioned to planes far beyond this one where I know they are experiencing the fullness of what they learned on earth and what they plan to bring back on their next journey.
For those of us still buzzing around and creating and discovering I am thrilled to say that there is an incredible shift in the air as far as fashion, lesbians, queerness, masculine beauty, design and designers go.

Saint Harridan
As you well know I am fashion advisor to the fabulous brand Saint Harridan, that not only surpassed their goal on Kickstarter but became the 7th ranked fashion fundraiser in the history of the crowdfunding site! Congratualtions to Mary Going and his team of talented and amazing people that made this all possible.

Saint Harridan
I am also happy to say that other lesbian owned and operated companies that were featured on Preppybaba last year are still growing and thriving and I look forward to seeing more and more entrepreneurs with fashion dreams take the plunge into the market.
(I do consult on such matters, so feel free to contact me at CONSULTING)

A suit company for women who love men’s clothing! Let’s help get this start-up funded!!
From Mary Going:
Saint Harridan makes you look like you. On your Best Day. On your Boldest Day. We make high quality suits that make heads turn. We believe in staking a claim. If you feel right in a suit, wear one.
Saint Harridan is raising funds to produce our first suit line in three classic wool options (Sand, Navy and Charcoal). We are ready: we have prototypes, “analog” patterns, a digitizing pattern-maker, a grading service (for sizing), a source for fabric and trim, and a secured factory quote. Your pledges will finalize our pattern & grading work, and send us into production for the first 100 shirts, jackets and trousers. When you pre-order from us now, you’ll be giving us the green light to launch!
Saint Harridan is of the community, for the community. We listen. We developed our designs using a focus group; we work with real-life models. Going forward we want to hear from you. Should our next item be a vest? A suit with a different cut? Casual dress pants? Sweaters? But, FIRST, we must hear from you that this is a good idea. If we don’t meet our Kickstarter goal, we won’t have enough evidence that this business can work and we cannot produce the suits. We believe Saint Harridan’s time has come. If you agree, don’t wait. Pre-order your suit today! Thank you.

“Oh the weather outside is frightful. But the fire is so delightful…” finally, it’s getting cold outside!
And with that come layers (yay!)…

Lots and lots of layers.

Scarves, jackets, vests, sweaters, t-shirts, undershirts, thermals (in all different colors), coats, slickers, hats, caps, boots, gloves, (mittens?!), muffs…I could go on for days…

Dandi’s this is the time of the year to have fun with your clothes and pronounce your style. And let’s be honest sometimes that’s just hard to do when you are stuck wearing shorts and t-shirts.

- Bastian
Just because it’s dreary outside doesn’t mean you have to work at getting your wardrobe to match. Don’t be afraid of color.
Do go outside of your comfort zone this season, even if it’s with something small like a scarf. Always, always challenge yourself from season to season.
Remember to style your look from head-to-toe and as the good ole song says”..let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”

Fall is upon us and that is always a great reason to go out and replace last season’s jeans with something new and fresh.

And by new and fresh I am not just referring to just a new pair of the same-0le-same-ole that you know makes your butt look great. No, I’m encouraging you to do something different and daring and seek out a new designer. Challenge yourself this season, get out of your designer ruts and go try on and find a new muse to excite your way of Dandi-ing up your wardrobe.

Thvm (them) Atelier is based out of Los Angeles and is the husband and wife team of Olga Nazarova and Brian Kim. They keep the collections simple and they are very reasonable for any Dandi’s wallet.

What I love about them most is that they also have a photo driven magazine that goes along with each collection called Thvm Rag. Gotta love ‘em for that!
